Many pits have been sunk in this area on E and Wsides of the road. Mining of coal probably started very early as the seams of coal show in the river vallies. A mine was working here by the 1840s but mining may have ceased in the 1850s as record can be found of any workings until 1929 when a shortlived mine was sunk,
