Activities

Desk Based Assessment

The 1st Edition OS map shows a Tile Works in the field to the south east of Crossrigs (see 205/0017). A kiln is shown in the north of the site, beside the track while a longer north-south building housed the tile works themselves. Such sites were not common in the Borders but those which were built usually date from the late 18th or early 19th centuries. Some of the materials used to fashion the tiles was excavated from the area now occupied by a pond on the adjacent farm.
