Field Visit (21 November 2010)

This cast-iron guide plate is situated on the N side of the B9171 public road at its junction with a minor road that runs W then NW to Arncroach. It measures 0.8m in breadth by 1.1m in height and it is secured to a modern pillar constructed of mortared setts. The upper edge of the plate bears two legends, both being ‘St Andrews Foundry’. The front has been painted white, but the surround and most of the detail within the two information panels is highlighted in black.

Below a black-painted representation of a hand pointing west, the left panel indicates the distances in miles to Arncroach (½), Baldutho (1¼), Over Kellie (1½), Lingo (3¼), Higham (4½), Belliston (1¼), Gibliston (2), Lathallan (4), Largoward (5), Gilston (6), Falfield (6½), Teasses (9), Montrave (10½), Peat Inn (5½), Greigston (6½), Pitscottie (9½), Cupar (12½) and St Andrews (10).
