Archaeology Notes

NO49NE 9 c. 46 98

At Dinnet Bridge there was formerly a ford, which at one time was guarded by a fort, which can still be traced.

A I McConnachie 1898.

At NO 457 981 is a large roughly oval rise in marshy land, which is surrounded by drainage ditches, giving the impression of a moat. Possibly what McConnochie refers to as a fort. The Dee is shallower here but there is no sign of a ford, although an old road from Dinnet (See NO49NE 5) appears to terminate on the N bank some 300m upstream. According to Ogston's survey and supported by Mr Fenton Wyness, there was an ancient ford at Mill of Dinnet at NO 471 988 (Information from A C O'Dell 1935 from a 25"map and MS of A Ogston) (Information from Mr Fenton Wyness, 45 Salisbury Terrace, Aberdeen) Although there is now no trace of it, it has probably been a ford connecting an old road to the N from the mill, with the Firmounth drove road.

Visited by OS (A A) 18 November 1968.

Listed.

Scottish Castle Survey 1988; N Bogdan and I B D Bryce 1991.
