(NO 4216 8163) Old Mine (NAT) (Silver and Lead)

OS 6" map, Forfarshire, 1st ed., (1861)

A narrow fissure in the rock of Gilfumman about 30 yards deep, dug out while mining lead in 1678.

Name Book 1861.

In 1593-4 Sir David Linsay opened silver and lead mines within the baronry of Edzell and Glenesk, and erected smelting works in the district. They are mentioned in 1602 but seem to have fallen into disuse about the end of the 17th century.

A Jervise 1853.

Silver and lead workings comprising a small surface quarry, c. 8.0m across (shown on OS 6" map, Forfarshire and Angus, 2nd ed. 1903) and the mainly natural fissure described by the Name Book. They lie at the base of a scree slope which may obscure further workings. No trace of buildings or slag.

Visited by OS (N K B) 9 November 1967.
