Field Visit

MY1 (NL56858357) Standing stone.

Location: Shelf on hill-slope.

Description: Sited on the south flank of Macphee's Hill at the north end of Mingulay Bay, close to the possible chamber tomb MY2 and several artificially constructed platforms of unknown date and function (MY3 and 4). This is the only standing stone of note on the island that has clearly been erected and is not the result of natural processes. The dimensions of the stone as seen above ground level, 0.8 m high by 0.6 x 0.18 m in section, are substantial, but not comparable to the massive standing stones found on Barra at Brevig and Borve. The presence of other large randomly scattered stone blocks close by casts come doubt on MY1 functioning as a free-standing monolith and not part of a robbed chamber tomb similar to MY2 just a few metres to the east.
