Archaeology Notes

NO44SE 3 46089 43993 Fothringham House.

NO44SE 36 46097 43950 Fothringham House (David Bryce 1861).

The Fotheringhams inherited the Barony of Inverarity early in the 16th century, and shortly after, erected a mansion. After the church had been removed from its old site (ie. 1754 - see NO44SE 2) the old house of Fotheringham was erected on the site of the old Kirkton. It stood a short distance from the confluence of two streams which, when united, take the name of Kerbet. The house was demolished, and a new one built a short way off, in 1861.

A J Warden 1880-5.

Local enquiries failed to reveal the original site of the 16th century Fotheringham House, although the farmer at the Home Farm stated that a former house stood on the mound nearby - ie. on the site of the old church of Inverarity (NO44SE 2) - presumably this was the 1754 house. The 1861 mansion has been recently demolished and only a pile of rubble exists at its site.
