(NO 4824 4148) Hare Cairn (NR) (remains of)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1972)

Haercairns or Hoar Cairn is a very large heap of stones under which many human bones have been found.

A J Warden 1880-5.

Hare Cairn, which disappeared long ago, is said to have been merely erected for the purpose of indicating the boundary of adjacent proprietors.

Name Book 1858.

This cairn has been considerably mutilated, but the outer perimeter is still visible, giving an overall diameter of c. 25.0m; the maximum height is 1.2m. A fence bisects it from N-S. It is clearly too large to be a boundary marker.

Visited by OS (J L D) 4 June 1958.

This monument comprises the remains of a burial cairn which lies partly on rough pasture and partly in arable farmland at around 180m OD; a fence bisects it from NNE-SSW. It comprises a cairn some 25m in diameter, although possibly originally somewhat larger, with a maximum surviving height of about 1.2m.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 6 March 1997.
