Archaeology Notes

NO44NE 1 470 499.

Cup marked Stone: A slab found at Welton (NO 470 499) (OS 6" map, Forfarshire, 2nd ed., 1923), measuring 3' x 2'7", bears 17 cups, 4 surrounded by a single ring, 3 by a double ring, and 3 by a triple ring. In 6 cases, radial grooves spring from the cup. The slab is now preserved at Dunnichen House.

Part of the stone is said to still remain in the ground at St Peter's Well.

Dunnichen House has been demolished and rebuilt. The stone's whereabouts is unknown to the owner and an aged employee.
