Archaeology Notes

NO43SW 53 4035 3024.

(NO 4035 3024) St Clement's Well stood near the site, and probably formed a portion of, the old Church of St Clement (NO43SW 49). It was known coloquially as "The Saint's Well" and "The Bishop's Well", the latter name having been suggested by the rudely carved representation of a bishop's head with mitre that surmounted the inbricated roof. The well was built in a circular form of ashlar work, and bore unmistakable traces of splendid workmanship. It was removed in 1872.

A C Lamb 1895.

Site occupied by City Square.

Visited by OS (J L D) 17 April 1958.
