(NO 4053 3394) Claverhouse Castle (NR) (site of)

OS 6" map, (1969)

The site of the castle of the Claverhouse family as indicated by Morris (Mr Morris, Schoolmaster) although a 19th century ruin occupies the generally accepted site at NO 4046 3380.

The foundation of the castle was removed about 1792 when objects indicating an ecclesiastical establishment - font, altar, etc - were discovered. These were deduced to have belonged to a chapel associated with the castle (Statistical Account {OSA} 1792).

OSA 1792; Name Book 1859.

No trace.
