Archaeology Notes

HY62NW 4 6388 2779

(Area: HY 638 278) A short cist containing a beautifully shaped small steatite urn, was found beneath the floor of the gig-shed at Clestrain farm-house about 1908 by Mr Chalmers, Sandybank (HY 646 269).

The urn was purchased for National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1931.

J G Callander 1931; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1932 (Purchases); RCAHMS 1946, visited 1928.

HY 6388 2779. The farmer at Clestrain indicated where the gig-shed, a wooden building formerly stood, its position now being occupied by farm outbuildings.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RL), 15 July 1970.

A cist containing a steatite urn (NMAS EK 38) was discovered c.1908 beneath farm buildings at Clestrain.

RCAHMS 1984.
