This building contained the electricity generator sets required by the North British Diesel Engine Works (built 1912/13). The North British Diesel Engine Works was part the eastern expansion of Glasgow on the south side of the River Clyde in the early years of the 20th century. By this time, electricity was the power source of choice for manufacturing processes.
