Field Visit (June 2006)
Set into the north wall of the East Garden the circular gateway is 2.45m in diameter.
Gate wrought iron with two leaves. Both sides pivot at base and have bracket loop attachment at top. The vertical bars have alternating round sectioned iron
bars of full height with spear terminals and diamond sectioned iron of half height, also with spear terminals. Wrought curls bolted / riveted on. The gate is set in a circular aperture in the N garden wall (085 continuation). On the inside the gate is approached and framed by a set of 9 original steps with curving parapets on either side. Two additional steps at the bottom appear to be recent. At the top of the steps there is a small platform 2.7m wide and 3.7m in depth. The parapets continue on either side up to the face of the wall. There are stone pillars 610mm square at the ends of the parapet on either side of the steps. At present these carry metal urns but these are recent replacements. The pillars are reflected at the top of the steps and beside the wall by granite blocks 430mm square on the wall.
The steps led the eye to the gate. The gate itself although functional only leads to the North Drive and can be regarded as a decorative rather than functional feature. A large stone is positioned exactly opposite the gate, on the other side of the road. It is now overgrown.
