World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (4 October 2013)

In 1916 rest facilities were provided at the suggestion of the base commander, Sir James Startin. Granton School was used at first but a hut was procured and then extended to provide sleeping accommodation, baths, recreation room with piano, billiard table and so on. The hut was, from 1917, named after Princess Louise, who gave a significant donation.

The hut occupied the east side of the open area of Granton Square, which is now in part occupied by a public toilet. It comprised an L-shaped single-storey pitched roof hut, with an imposing two-storey section with a dome at the SE corner.

The hut had been removed by the time of the survey of the 1933 OS 1:2500 map (1931) and replaced by a shelter.
