World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (17 July 2013)

Osborne (2006) notes the existence of a drill hall in the parish of Holm in 1914, but was unable to identify a building. A drill hall, however, is marked on the 2nd edition OS 1:2500 map, at the then edge of the village of St Mary's, in the parish. In 1914, it was the base for No. 6 Company, Orkney Royal Garrison Artillery, Defended Ports.

The core of the drill hall probably survives within the modernised, renovated and extended community centre. The hall seems to have been of five bays (four windows symmetrically around the door) with a lower hall behind.

Two buildings are shown on the 2nd edition OS 1:2500 map, the hall appears to be the west building, and the east building may be the associated accommodation.

Information from HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project (GJB) 17 July 2013.
