Sitename : Deer Sound

Altname : The Ness

Note : One of three linear features marked on late 17th-century map in Derrness Sound (Vooght, Claes Janszoon &

Keulen, Johannes van (1696) Nieuwe paskaart van de Orcades Eylanden). They may not be accurately located due to accuracy of original map. They appear to protect the entrance of the anchorage of Deer Sound so have been interpreted as breakwaters. However, they have perpendicular lines along them, which could be nausts or landing bays. Located at NGR 354406E 1008891N
