Archaeology Notes

NO41SW 6 4233 1340 to 4232 1338.

The Traills of Blebo settled in Kemback early in the 14th century. They held Blebo till the time of Charles I and in 1649 it passed by purchase to the Bethune family. In 1599 the house was besieged by Sir James Learmont of Dairsie.

A H Millar 1895

(NO 4232 1337) The rebuilt remains of a fairly large 16th century house are noticeable in a byre near the dovecot (AD 1749) at Blebo Hole. The masonry of the doors, windows and gateways of the byre is of dressed ashlar, and a length of 16th century roll moulding and part of a probable 17th century tombstone have been built into the western wall. There are building foundations on the north side (The above may possibly be connected with the mansion of the Traills).

Information from D C Baird, 28 June 1952.

NO 4233 1340. The end wall of an earlier building, c.3m wide and 4m high and incorporating re-used building material is visible in the west wall of a byre. Other material has been re-used in the adjoining farm buildings.

Visited by OS (DS) 17 October 1956

OS (DS) confirmed. The foundations mentioned by Baird are at NO 4232 1342 and consist of grassed-over stone walls up to 0.5m high comprising the remains of a building, probably a line of cottages, apparently 37.0m long x 5.0m wide with an annexe at the NE end. The yard shown on OS 25" at NO 4232 1338 may represent the remains of the dovecot mentioned by Baird but it has been reduced to a bank of rubble less than 0.5m high.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RDL) 25 May 1964

Activities

Field Visit (9 May 1928)

Dovecot, Pitscottie.

A ruinous two-chambered dovecot stands in a park less than half a mile north-east of the hamlet of Pitscottie. It is built of rubble and is rectangular on plan, measuring 29 by 15 feet over all. On the lintel above the entrance to one, chamber are the initials W.H., while the lintel of the other entrance is dated 1749, evidently the date of erection.

RCAHMS 1933, visited 9 May 1928.
