Archaeology Notes

NO41SW 5 42 11 to 42 12.

A cinerary urn and a flint knife or side-scraper were found in an apparently artificial mound whilst ploughing the highest field on the farm of Callange, Ceres.

The urn, inverted, lay on a flat stone under a large slab of freestone and seemed to have been nearly full of burnt bones. The urn (diameter 9 1/2" height 12") has the base and part of one side missing, and is ornamented under the rim with a row of knobs abd short incised lines between: on the collar are patches of finger-tip impressions alternating with patches of short incised lines. A row of short vertical lines appears on the shoulder.

Both finds were donated to the National Museum of Antiquities by General Briggs of Strathairly in 1896.

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1896

Callange Farm is situated upon the summit of a low ridge. The tenant has no knowledge of the urn or of a mound, and knows no field answering the description given above. No trace of a tumulus was seen during a perambulation of the area.
