Archaeology Notes

NO41SW 3 4104 1476.

NO 4104 1476. About 1952 a cist was found at the spot indicated, and the site excavated by Mr D C Baird. In the cist was an urn and a flint knife. Also found within the cist were teeth, jawbone and a fragment of a skull. These relics are said to be in the St Andrews Museum (J H Graham, Rumgally House, Cupar). This short cist lies exposed on an isolated piece of rising ground in Rumgally Park. There have been trial diggings around, but no traces of any other cists. The cist measures 1.1 x 1.0 x 0.3m deep. Beside it is a large cover stone measuring 1.5 x 1.1 x 0.2m thick. The relics were not seen in the Bell Pettigrew Museum, University, St Andrews.

Information from D C Baird, Assistant Professor of Physics, Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, 24 February 1958

The cist is still in situ and as described and illustrated by Baird.
