Activities

Watching Brief (10 August 2011 - 11 October 2011)

NS 7964 9057 A programme of work consisting of a GPR survey, evaluation and watching brief was undertaken, 10 August–11 October 2011, in the car park of the existing Bannockburn Heritage Centre in advance of the construction of a new heritage centre. The trial trench evaluation consisted of the excavation of ten trenches, covering 360m2, equivalent to 15% of the development area. The trenches were placed in a diagonal pattern across the site and also targeted anomalies identified by the GPR survey. The watching brief monitored the excavation of one borehole and eight test pits. No significant archaeological features were recorded.

Excavation (7 May 2012 - 11 May 2012)

An archaeological excavation was carried out by GUARD Archaeology Ltd, on behalf of The Centre of Battlefield Archaeology acting for National Trust for Scotland, on an area proposed for development at Bannockburn Heritage Centre car park. The trench covered 300m² of the south area of the car park. Eight significant archaeological features were encountered during the excavation work: four possible prehistoric pits, three stake holes and a post-medieval furrow . The work was undertaken between 7th and 11th of May 2012.

Archaeological Evaluation (24 March 2017 - 27 March 2017)

NS 796 906 A programme of test pitting was undertaken, 24–27 March 2017, within the grounds of the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre, over an area due to be developed into a Physic Garden. The project had a strong community engagement aspect, with work undertaken with four school groups and participation by 110 volunteers. A metal detector survey was also carried out. A total of 17 test pits (each 1m2) were excavated. No features of archaeological significance were revealed, though a range of later historic and modern artefacts was retained.
