Activities

Antiquarian Observation (17 November 1860)

(NO c. 3471 3102) On the 17th November 1860, while laying the Dundee - Lochee railway line, a cist was found on the farm of Mill of Invergowrie, in the highest of a series of hillocks composed of gravel and sand. The site is about 150 yds E of the Paddock Stone (NO 33 SW 16). The cist, which measured 4' x 1'6", was covered by a large boulder weighing 6 - 7 cwt; it lay E-W and contained bones and an urn 5 3/4" in height, 6" in diameter across the mouth, and 2 3/4" across the base. The urn is preserved in Charleston farm.

Cists, without urns, have been found in most of the hillocks adjoining, but all have been levelled by the railway operations.

A Jervise 1868.
