(NO 3332 3282) Church (NAT)

OS 6" map, Forfarshire, 2nd ed., (1926)

Liff Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in 1839, replacing the edifice which was built in 1774 close to the foundations of the former church (OSA 1794).

These foundations can still be traced NW of the present church, and a massive monument erected to Dr Addison is said to mark the spot where the pulpit stood. The old building measured 65' x 27'; it had an aisle on the N, and the entrance was in the E gable.

The church was given to Scone Abbey by Alexander I (1106-24).

The cross within the churchyard was erected to commemorate the consecration of the new burying ground on 11 June 1933. It is built of 3 stones excavated from Hurly Hawkin (NO33SW 7).

OSA 1794; A J Warden 1880-5; A B Dalgetty 1940.

NO 3327 3283. The outline of the old church of Liff can just be traced NW of the present church. The foundations are covered by turf, and are 0.1m high and 0.7m broad. The overall dimensions are 20.0m x 8.0m, the N aisle being 7.0m x 6.0m. The whole area of the church is covered with grave-stones dating from c. 1850 onwards.

Visited by OS (J L D) 18 April 1958.
