Early Medieval Carved Stones Project

A’ Chill 4 (St Columba), Canna, Skye & Lochalsh, cross-slab

Measurements: H 0.75m, W 0.17m, D 0.11m

Stone type: Torridonian sandstone

Place of discovery: NG 2691 0540

Present location: in the burial ground at A’ Chill.

Evidence for discovery: found in re-use as a grave-marker in the burial-ground at A’ Chill. It is likely to have come from the earlier burial ground close to cross no 12.

Present condition: weathered.

Description

Towards the top of one broad face of the pillar-like slab there is an incised Latin cross with barred terminals.

Date range: seventh or eighth century.

(4) Burial-ground. Upright gravemarker, 0.75m by 0.17m by 0.11m thick. On one face it bears a cross incised with a V-section groove, 125mm high and 100mm in span. The surface is irregular and the cross worn, but it has well-defined barred terminals.
