Activities

Watching Brief (December 2007 - November 2008)

SUAT Ltd was commissioned by Rod Johnson of Create Engineering on behalf of their client, Alliance Trust (Finance) Ltd to undertake an archaeological watching brief (SUAT site code DD53) on development groundworks at the site of the former Burns and Harris building, Marketgait, Dundee. The site was of archaeological interest due to its close proximity to the presumed course of the 16th century town defences along the south west side of Long Wynd, and the recovery of medieval pottery discovered during earlier excavations of the site of the Overgate Centre.

This work was the second phase of watching brief on this development site. The first phase (also DD53) took place in February 2007 and was funded by Dundee City Council. The first phase observed the lifting of the floor slab and revealed a capped well which was measured and photographically recorded. The bedding for the slab of the demolished building remained in-situ.

The second phase watching brief took place during the period December 2007-February 2008 and November 2008, after the bedding for the slab of the demolished Burns and Harris building had been removed. It focused on excavations for ground beams, piles, a deep trench for a sewer and excavation to install a rainwater harvesting tank. The watching brief revealed a series of large quarry pits, foundation remains of a late 18th or 19th century building, a property division wall, and cassie setts representing the former surface of Long Wynd on the E edge of the site. Pottery evidence within the backfillingof the quarry pits dated from the 18th century. Residual medieval pottery sherds were recovered. No substantial evidence of occupation or use of the site predating the 18th century was found. The second phase of work was fully funded by Alliance Trust (Finance) Ltd.

Watching Brief (15 February 2007 - 20 February 2007)

SUAT Ltd were contracted by Dundee City Council to conduct an archaeological watching brief on the side of the former Burns and Harris building, Marketgait, Dundee. The work was undertaken during the demolition of the concrete flooring of this building, as the site is situated alongside the medieval city walls and medieval remains may lie under the flooring. The watching brief was requested as earlier excavations, within a short distance of this site, had uncovered medieval remains.

Information from SUAT, 2007

NO 3999 3003 We undertook an archaeological watching brief between 15-20 February 2007 on the site of the Burns and Harris building during the demolition of the concrete flooring covering the area. The site is between Tay Street Lane and the A99 West Marketgait in the centre of Dundee. In the past some medieval remains had been found to the S and E of the site. A row of four 19th-century mews buildings forms the western boundary of the site.
