(NO 3240 2151) Farmstead (NR)

OS 6" map (1959)

This homestead lies at the foot of the hill on which Greencraig fort (NO32SW 3) is situated, and was excavated by Bersu in 1947.

Rectangular on plan, it measured 65' by 55' within a low stony mound. A single circular hut, 32' in internal diameter and containing a ring of post-holes, enclosed by a low turf-and-stone bank, abutted on the W side of the enclosure. No finds were recorded, but it probably dates from after the pre-Roman Iron Age (2nd - possibly 6th century AD) judging by the rectangular plan and the solid base of the hut wall.

R W Feachem 1963; G Bersu 1950

Homestead, as described.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 2 June 1970
