Field System; Sheepfold; Enclosure; Rig and Furrow

To the S and E of Fairloans farmstead there is an extensive field-system, within which are the remains of at least three sheepfolds, two smaller enclosures and traces of rig cultivation.
The field system comprises several fields of irregular plan defined by turf banks, which enclose an area of approximately 12ha overall. The sheepfolds (NT 75498 08305, NT 75210 08184, NT 75109 08130) are turf walled, subrectangular and of similar dimensions, measuring up to 46m by 40m transversely. The smaller enclosures (NT 75175 08290, NT 75245 08345) are also turf-walled, but irregular on plan and measure approximately 30m by 15m transversely. Whilst some rig cultivation is visible beyond the extent of the field system, there are areas where there appears to be rig and furrow contained within field banks.
