Archaeology Notes

NO32SE 38 3618 2363.

NO 3618 2363. A cup and ring marked boulder was found in 1976, when a road gate was being replaced, and is now preserved at NO 3716 2462, west of Naughton House. The west gatepost was found to be embedded in a flattish slab of metamorphic rock, 1.10m by 0.80m by 0.52m maximum thickness. One face is flat, with nine definite and two possible cups; the other is covered by a complex of at least eighty cups, cup-and-ring, dumb-bells and channels. It is possible that this stone had formed part of a cist from the cemetery on Battle Law (NO32SE 7), many slabs from which are lying beside the gate.

Information from R W B Morris letter and map, 7 June 1976; J Kenworthy and E Proudfoot 1976.
