Condition Survey (21 April 1997 - 21 April 1997)

On the steep hillslope above the river Shiel in an area of good grass fed by a series of burns (three of which are illustrated on the OS 1:10,000 map) is a group of shieling huts.

The boundaries of the shieling ground appear to be formed by an irregular turf and stone dyke that runs from the rock face at NG 9845 1380 to the head of a precipitate burn at cNG 9845 1355. A similar turf and stone dyke is situated about 500m to the W running also in a sinuous course that links natural outcrops of rock. The S end is probably a stretch of turf and stone dyke that runs NE from the river Shiel in a line paralleled by a modern post & wire fence.

The remains of at least 3 separate shieling huts were recorded, aligned E/W and measuring c4-5m by c2.5m defined as rounded stone footings, spread to 0.9m wide and c0.4m high, for turf walled huts. Each had additional structures in association aligned approximately N/S and measuring c3m by c2m as well as small stores c2m in diameter. There is also an enclosure c4-4.5m in diameter composed of large boulders up to 0.6m high that was identified as a possible animal pen. This had subsequently been altered to create a ?store c1.5m in diameter with walls c1m high.
