Archaeology Notes

NO32SE 10 3688 2383.

(Name centred: NO 3688 2383) Supposed site of Battle (NR) Between Scots and Picts and the Danes (10th Century)

OS 6" map (1921)

The battle of Luncarty, in which Kenneth III is supposed to have gained a signal victory over the Danes, must be set down as a recent invention. Since no trace of the story of the battle is to be found even in Fordoun (Scoti-Chronicon 1684) or Wyntoun (Chronicle of Scotland), Boece, who first records the battle, must lie under strong suspicion of having entirely invented it.

J H Burton 1873

Luncarty - NO 09 29, Perthshire (NO02NE).
