The Chapel of Naughton is mentioned in some 12th - 13th century charters as being 'adjacent' to the church of Forgan, from which it might be supposed to be in the immediate vicinity of the church; but other charters use the word 'belonging', which does not give the same inference. It is more likely to have been in the western part of the parish, serving the area remote from the church. Naughton charters dating down to the 17th century mention as part of that estate known as 'Kirkhills', (knolls on the farm of Peacehills and south of the present cottages) as being the probable site of this chapel. The Naughton estate was disjoined from Forgan and given to Balmerino in 1650.
