Activities

Field Visit (9 May 1928)

Dovecots, Letham.

In this little village are three dovecots. The first, in the farm buildings in the lower part of the village, is as mall ruinous circular dovecot, measuring only 4 feet in internal diameter between the nests and having a present height of 20 feet at most. The second stands on the steep lane leading through the village. It is rectangular on plan, measuring externally 14 feet 4 inches by 12 feet 5 inches, and has been considerably altered. The stone dormer, through which the birds entered, suggests a late-17th or early-18th century date for the construction. The third dovecot stands at the top of the lane. It also is rectangular on plan and measures 23 feet 8 inches by 13 feet 1 inch externally. The masonry indicates an 18th-century date.

RCAHMS 1933, visited 9 May 1928.
