Activities

Field Visit (13 March 2016)

This gravestone is situated 15m N of Newton House Stables (NJ91NE 80), where it stands with its back against the SE face of a stone wall. It is a plain sandstone slab with an asymmetrically rounded summit and tapering sides, measuring 0.87m high, 0.62m wide and 0.08m thick. The SE face bears the following thinly cut inscription: 'Here Lies / Sago / Died 4th Jan 1844 / Aged 48'. Given its location close to the stables, Sago was probably a horse.

Visited by RCAHMS (ATW and AMcC), 13 March 2016.
