(HY 5637 3759) Stone Cist (NR) (Mound c.6.0m diameter shown).
OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed., (1900).
A cist, measuring approximately 3'4" by 2', with its cover stone.
Name Book 1879.
RCAHMS mentions a stone cist some 300yds SE of Braeside.
RCAHMS 1946, visited 30 August 1928.
There is no trace of the cist described by the Name Book. It was presumably found in the mound, published on OS 25" 1900, which is c9.0m in diameter and 1.3m maximum height, and composed of earth and stone, with its summit dug into.
It does not seem to be spoil from a quarry closeby to the S, and is more likely to be a cairn than a natural mound with an inserted cist burial.
Resurveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (NKB) 24 July 1970.
A stony mound 9m in diameter and 1m high; this probably contained the cist recorded in 1879.
RCAHMS 1984.
Field Visit (October 1981)
As described [By OS Surveyor].
Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) Oct 81.
Field Visit (2 May 1994)
This bowl-shaped mound was recorded as part of the Orkney Barrows Project. Measuring 12.2m by 10.4m and 1.35m in height, it was noted that the cist is no longer visible.
The mound is visible from the N, E and S for 500m.
Information from the Orkney Barrows Project (JD), 1994
