ARCHITECT: James Gillespie Graham, 1813.

Proposed new tolbooth and Bridewell. The present prison obstructs the principal street and is too small. The committe of Heritors requires James Gillespie [Graham's] plan for a new Bridewell to be doubled in size. Estimate of cost ?2700.

Classic 2-storey 7-window composition with giant Roman doric columns at end bays, coupled at centre; ashlar, slated. Originally intended for the site at east end of St Catherine Street now occupied by the War Memorial. (Historic Environment Scotland List Entry)
