Archaeological Evaluation (4 October 2010 - 9 October 2010)
NM 61430 57082 An evaluation consisting of the surface
collection of struck lithics from a planting mound, the hand
excavation of 10 trial trenches and the subsequent extension
of 2 into larger evaluation trenches was undertaken 4–9
October 2010. The trial trenches recorded a number of struck
lithic concentrations but no in situ archaeological features.
This absence may partly reflect the effect of bioturbation on
sediments in the upper c0.45m of the soil profile, or be due to
the impact of ground water which was encountered at greater
depth. The trial trenches were extended at two locations, one
on the main terrace and the second (Trench 5) at the foot of
the steep slope that defined the western extent of the terrace.
A notable concentration of lithics, in part associated with a
buried soil horizon sealed beneath colluvium, was recorded
in Trench 5. This trench also contained an arrangement of
stones that could represent the remains of a bank or some
form of revetment.
