Activities

Note (October 2011)

This curved tank was built by the Edinburgh Wave Energy Group, which is now incorporated into Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh. The EUWEG dates back to 1974, when Stephen Salter invented the 'Duck' (a crest-spanning, deep-water, floating electricity generating termintor) which was envisaged as a converter of wave power into electricity. This curved tank (completed 2002) replaced the 'wide tank' built in 1977 and removed in 2002. The 'wide tank' was the first multi-directional wave tank suitable for testing the Salter 'Duck', an example of a 'crest-spanning' wave energy device. The curved tank is also used to test crest-spanning , wave energy devices and is served by a 5 Ton overhead gantry crane.

Associated with NT27SE 526.24 (University of Edinburgh, Fleeming Jenkin Building).

Information from Jamie Taylor, Research Officer at Artemis Intelligent Power Ltd, Edgefield Industrial Estate, Loanhead, Edinburgh and formerly a research officer of the original EUWEG, October 2011.

Visited by RCAHMS (MMD), June 2011.
