Archaeology Notes

NO29SE 6 26 93.

Three short stone cists containing ashes and bones were found before June, 1864 on top of Craigbeg, near Lochnagar Distillery. Each cist was surrounded by a circle of stones about 15 feet in diameter, possibly peristaliths, the stones weighing between 5 and 15 cwts. About a foot from one of the cists was found a carved stone ball, about 3 inches in diameter, with six circular discs, from one to two inches in diameter, cut on its surface. It was given to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) - AS 6- by Mr Begg, Lochnagar Distillery, on 13th June, 1864. (See also NO39SW 3.)

Craigbeg is not known in the locality. a 'small crag' at NO 264 937 overlooking Lochnagar Distillery (NO 2665 9385) is the most likely situation, but there is no trace of stone circles or cairns on its summit.
