(NO 2865 9462) St. Columba's Chapel (NR).

OS 6"map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1903)

The boulder foundations of this chapel measure about 35ft by 15ft within the walls and are suggestive of a Celtic origin. It stands in an enclosure with ruined stone wall planted with trees. Stirton places here the chapel noted by Keith before 1732 as "Saint Valentine's Chappell at Abergeldie". Simpson, noting that an adjac- ent pool in the River Dee is called "Poll-ma-chalmag, St. Colmoc's Pool", suggest that the real dedication was to St. Colmoc or Colm, of Buchan and Caithness, whose fame has been very largely overlain by the greater name of St. Columba.

Spalding Club 1847-69; J Stirton 1925; W D Simpson 1953.

Situated on a morainic knoll in pasture field are the remains of a chapel and enclosure, possibly the burial ground, as described. No further information regarding dedication.

Visited by OS (R L) 24 October 1967.
