Activities

Field Visit (3 May 2009)

A low bank no more than 2m in thickness and 0.4m in height cuts across the neck of this precipitous headland. There is no trace of any stone facing and it is probably built entirely of turf, the shallow hollows to either side being stripping scars for its construction. The purpose of this turf dyke was almost certainly to control the access of stock to and from the headland, which extends to an area of about 4.5ha, although some 2ha of this is bare rock and in places elsewhere the topsoil is under active erosion.
