Archaeological Evaluation (October 2006 - November 2006)
This report describes the results of an archaeological investigation undertaken during excavations for a new car park and access road at Lothianburn Golf Club, Biggar Road, some 6km S of the centre of Edinburgh. The car park is to replace the present system of on-road
parking on Biggar Road (the A702) which has proved unsatisfactory.
The archaeological requirement was imposed by the City of Edinburgh Council as a condition of planning (Planning Application 05/03897/FUL) because of the proximity of known archaeological sites. Three cist burial, not two as is reported by some authorities, (collectively numbered NT26NW 10 by RCAHMS, at NGR: NT 2493 6722) were uncovered during the construction of the clubhouse in 1909. A cropmark enclosure has also been identified between the Biggar Road and the entrance to the nearby Swanston Golf Club.
The archaeological work was undertaken during late October and early November 2006 under the supervision of Robin Murdoch of Scotia Archaeology.
