Activities

Field Visit (7 May 2010)

This covered well stands next to a pump by the side of the road to Barra Head Lighthouse. The well-house is roughly circular on plan, with a flattened N face. It measures 3.3m in diameter over mortared rubble walls 1.1m high, and it has a flat roof of stone lintels. The entrance is on the N, towards the road, and retains its timber door-frame. The interior is circular. An iron pipe runs 5m from the well to the pump-house. This has been reduced to a concrete plinth edged with rows of iron bolts, though the pump-engine, manufactured by R A Lister & Co of Dursley, remains in situ. Finally, immediately to the W of the pump there is a semi-circular stance edged with stone slabs and opening onto the road; this may be the site of a third building.

The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Hebrides 1880, sheet lxx) depicts a 'Chalybeate Well' here. It is again depicted on the 2nd edition of that map (1904), with the additional note that it is 'Covered'.
