Activities

Field Visit (13 May 2015)

This farmstead comprises two buildings, - a range set parallel to but detached from the NW side of a roughly square yard or enclosure and a second, much smaller, structure adjoining the yard at the NW end of its SW side. The range, which is constructed of lime-mortared stone and orientated across the slope, measures 18m from NE to SW by 4.5m transversely over walls averaging 0.7m in thickness and surviving up to 2.2m in height. It contains two large compartments, each fitted with a fireplace and a press-cupboard, but there were also originally outshots, of which little is now visible, at both the NE and SW ends of the range, The buildings are depicted roofed on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the 25-inch map (Orkney, Sheet LXXXIV.16, 1882; 1902); the farmstead is also shown on the 3rd edition of the OS 1-inch to a mile map of Scotland (1912, Sheet 119, Kirkwall).

Note (7 November 2016)
