Orkney Smr Note (1999)

In a gently sloping field of not recently disturbed grassland, leading down to Cot Burn, are the remains of a possible well. An irregular water-filled depression, c.3 m E-W by 2 m, has been faced on its north and east by two large recumbent slabs, both bearing an inscription. The larger slab on the north side, c.1.3 m long, has the letters ‘WC’ carved on it. The east slab, which is mostly covered by turf, is inscribed with ‘WC COUTT’ and, just below the turf line, ‘NI’.
