Note (21 December 1992)

NO23SE 45 258 311.

A plan of Abernyte in 1756 not only shows Abernyte itself, but also Over Town, immediately to the N. Abernyte is depicted as an irregular cluster of buildings, with both individual buildings and terraces, whilst the buildings of Over Town are set on either side of a street. Considerable depopulation had taken place by 1793, which the author of the Statistical Account attributed principally to the expulsion of cottagers, and by 1861-2 the fermtoun of Abernyte had almost entirely disappeared, only Abernyte farm remaining. Over Town, too, declined; from some twenty-one buildings in 1756, the number had fallen to nine in 1861-2 and the name no longer appeared on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, sheet 87, 1867). Several of the surviving buildings at Over Town are of 18th-century date.
