Orkney Smr Note

Two burnt mounds, HY 2966 2097 and HY 2962 2100, roughly 12 m in diameter by max 0.75 m high, but they have probably been flattened for road construction or earlier this century by agriculture.

Presuming any structures are to the bog/streamside of them their rears lie more or less along the old fence line, not marked on the 1:10000 map.

The first burnt mound (2966 2097) was watched during its slight destruction for development. It was slicedby the E/W road at the bottom of the site. There the mound was approximately 0.5 m thick on an old gravel surface on clay. No features were cut . No finds were made.

The second mound lies just to the W of the modern gateway and new road. It was untouched by development but is still at risk.

Rubble was dumped on top of the mounds, sealing them.

This watching brief was sponsored by the Orkney Housing Association.
