PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM NO.60: MISS MURRAY'S ALBUM
Album of amateur and commercial photographs and commercial prints and engravings.
Insc: (inside) 'Lizzie M. Murray. Woodside House, 1883'.
The album includes dated photographs of the Murray's house, 'Woodside' in Blairgowrie, and of 'Lintrose', their estate in Cargill, together with other buildings of the Blairgowrie/Coupar-Angus district. Also included are interior views of two houses in Edinburgh, No.4 Torphichen Street, and No.12 Howard Place - interesting because the interiors may be seen at different dates. There are also various buildings and views of London, Oxford, Dublin, Canterbury etc. The photographs date from 1883 - c.1902.
Contains many engravings and lithographic prints of British and European royalty and celebrities of the day, along with cartoons and fashion plates. These include two views of the Great Fire in Parliament Square, Edinburgh, 16 November 1824; "The Passing of the Mistress of the Seas" - ships in Portsmouth Harbour on 1 February 1901, and coloured fashion plates by Henry de Hem and from The Queen magazine of 1884. "Yuletide in Canada" is the subject of an attractive print showing two children on a sledge, decorated with holly, in glowing colours. At a slightly later time snapshots and views have been pasted in. These show members of the Purvis, Moncrieff, Jackson, Wayne, Collins-Wood and Hill-Whitton families and iinclude many snapshots of young children. Other portrait photographs are of J. Buchanan Hamilton of Leny; Duncan Moncrieff; Rev E. Sugden of St Anne's church, Coupar Angus (which is also shown decorated for Christmas 1888); the Very Rev V L Briton, Dean of St Andrews 1898; George Palmer; David Murray; Arthur Blake; Willie Jardine; George, Ethel and Jean Kinloch; and Edward and family 1908. Two photographs show very small children, Frances and Darby Jackson, in pannier baskets on the back of a donkey being led, first by a uniformed nursemaid and afterwards by an old lady.
