(NO 2393 3893) Market Cross (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1860)

Market Cross (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1903)

This was once the market cross of Kettins, but the market has long been done away with and the cross allowed to go to decay, so that at the present time there only remains a square stone about 1' (0.3m) in height.

It was removed to the E end of Kettins church in 1873, and Small describes the remains there as 'a large square stone supporting an octagonal shaft 2'3" (0.69m) high, which in turn supports an octagonal basin - probably a font.'

Name Book 1860; J W Small 1900

The remains of the Kettins market cross shaft are situated at NO 2381 3905, immediately in front of the E gable of the church. It, and the font, are as described by Small.

Visited by OPS (JLD) 2 May 1958

The stump of the cross stands in the burial-ground immediately outside the E end of Kettins parish church (NO23NW 6). A perforated stone basin has been set upon it.

Visited by RCAHMS (PC), 1987.
