Barnauld is a working farmsteading comprising a mixture of 19th century agricultural buildings and modern sheds. It was not recorded in detail on the date of visit.

‘Barnald’ is first depicted on Roy’s Military Map (1747-55) and it is shown in more detail on a contemporary estate plan (Foulis 1758-9), which depicts seven buildings and three yards, in two distinct foci 100m apart. By 1863, the date of survey for the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Buteshire 1869, Sheet CCXV), the farmstead had been rebuilt at or near the easternmost of the two foci. At this time it comprised two ranges, one on the N, which had a garden attached to its E side and which probably contained a dwelling, and one on the S, which incorporated a mill powered by water fed via a lade from a large pond immediately to the E.
