Archaeology Notes

NO22SE 9 c. 27 20

A Class IVA battle axe (F E S Roe 1066), dredged from the River Tay near Ballinbreich (NO 27 20), was given to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1883 by A Laing (Accession no AH 57). It is of granite, and is 5 1/2" long by 2" maximum breadth with a 1" diameter perforation.

NMS AH 57. This battle-axe is of Intermediate-Developed form and has been petrologically attributed to group XII (picrite from near Hyssington in the Welsh Marches).
